A Pharmacy Technician is responsible for assuring facility compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, directives, policies and procedures applying to the dispensing, storage, transfer, inventory and accountability of controlled substances. This position requires significant independent decision making with minimal supervision. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education or Experience. A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English. Grade Determinations: GS-05 Education or Experience: Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included at least 24 semester hours of courses related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology; successful completion of pertinent specialized training courses in pharmaceutical and pharmacy services while serving in the Armed Forces is creditable on a month-for-month basis up to the 1 year of experience required for the GS-5 level; or at least 1 year of experience at the next lower level that demonstrates the core competencies (KSAs) described at the GS-4 level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment. Knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique. Knowledge of basic inventory procedures. Knowledge of pharmacy information systems. Assignment. This is the full performance level for pharmacy technicians. Employees at this grade level serve as staff pharmacy technicians receiving little guidance from more experienced staff members for more complex patients and procedures, and require minimal supervision. Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, involving standing for prolonged periods of time, lifting/carrying of pharmaceutical supplies weighing up to 40 lbs., and bending/ stooping. ["Duties include but are not limited to: Assist in other patient care areas as deemed necessary to maintain the consistency of overall pharmacy services. Read and interpret prescriptions or medication orders, obtains proper medication or material in the proper strength and dosage form; determines the proper amount and counts, pours, or measures the medications; affixes proper label; and records required data on ScriptPro label. After a final check by a Pharmacist, technician will dispense medication in an ambulatory care, pass or discharge situations. Collect drug use evaluation data for quality improvement purposes. Operate and maintain complicated pharmacy equipment such as ScriptPro. Perform non-sterile compounding for oral and external use medications along with the reconstitution of medication suspensions. After prescription/order(s) are filled they will be reviewed by a pharmacist for therapeutic propriety, reviews order for technical accuracy and converts order if necessary, to ensure the item dispensed corresponds to the drug and dose ordered. Answer questions from pharmacy and non-pharmacy personnel regarding drug distribution. Identifies basic therapeutic problems such as duplicate therapy with drugs in the same class and alerts the pharmacist to the possible need for clinical intervention. Assist in total quality improvement activities and participates by continually seeking ways to improve services. Maintain, verify, stock, and replace outdates in patient care areas, automated storage and dispensing devices. Monitor refrigerator temperatures on a daily basis. Management of kiosk data for patients waiting in queue for assurance of proper workflow. Perform duties as assigned by pharmacy management.
