The St. Louis VA Medical center is currently seeking two (2). highly qualified and motivated Pharmacy Technicians to perform in all areas of pharmacy including inpatient and outpatient settings. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. Pharmacists must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). Education. A high school diploma or equivalent. Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above. Grade Determinations: GS-06 Requirements: you must have one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade (05) which includes receiving/filling/distributing medication orders, daily operation and maintenance of automated equipment, participation in inventory control, and collection of data for reports/statistical purposes and requiring minimal supervision. In addition, candidate must demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:1. Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.2. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.3. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.4. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.5. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.6. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders. Physical Requirements: Physical movements involve completion of routine pharmacy functions which include but are not limited to significant computer work/typing, prescription order entry and processing, contact of patients (both face to face and via phone). Certain tasks are repetitive in nature and require multiple steps performed in succession for success. The incumbent should be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds without significant difficulty. Incumbent must be able to stand or sit in one place for considerable time during completion of complex tasks. Complexity of mental processes involved is extensive, demanding, and challenging. ["Duties include, but not limited to: Reads and interprets prescription orders; obtains proper medication or material in the proper strength and dosage form; determines proper amount and counts, pours, or measures the medications; affixes proper label; and records required data to appropriate system. After a final check by a pharmacist, dispenses medication in ambulatory care, mail order, or discharge situations. Fills unit-dose medications dispensed to inpatient areas (e.g. emergency med-carts, point of care machines) independently Maintains, verifies, stocks, and replaces outdates in patient care areas and automated point of care machines. Routinely analyzes medication performance. Runs reports to remove items with no usage to reduce waste and ensure space availability. Utilizes reporting to ensure ordered medications are available in the appropriate point of care unit. Compounds routine sterile products with aseptic technique. Maintains the ability to follow written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials, such as oncology agents, if required. This includes calculation, all manipulation, labeling, documentation and production reports. Performs all the duties of lower graded technicians as required Processes computerized, oral, and written prescription requests Provides training to new or existing staff. Collects drug use evaluation data for quality improvement purposes as required Maintains computer security, physical security of pharmacy areas, and confidentiality of sensitive patient information.
